A few months ago, the Guardian - along with Natural England - ran a "Name a Species Competition" in which they asked the public to come up with common names for 10 rare UK species. I'm delighted to discover that one of my suggestions was chosen.
This is Ophiura albida, the "Serpents' Table Brittle Star".
Congratulations to the other winners. Some great names there, particularly "Hotlips fungus", the overall winner. (The fungi belong to group called discomycetes, or "discos" for short, so you can actually have a "Hotlips disco".)
