And the Best Scary Book Cover From the 1960s Goes to...

I love these pulpy horror and fantasy covers from the 60s and 70s. This one is a classic. I actually bought this book on the strength of that cover. Genius.

Gosh, that brings back memories. I've never seen that book, but I received another one called Tales of the Mysterious and the Macabre as a school book prize; I think it must have been about 1970. I still have it somewhere. The cover is not as memorable, but it's done in much the same style.

How bizarre. I just bought this book (and its companion, Tales of the Mysterious and Macabre) at Half Price Books a couple of weeks ago. I'd never seen them before and bought them because, well, H. P. Lovecraft was a fan.

Great cover. I just received his, "Best Ghost Stories of Algernon Blackwood" in the mail. Unfortunately, the cover to the edition I purchased would work better as psychedelic wallpaper or a headache inducer. One of the best covers I’ve seen recently (I actually received it with Blackwood’s book) is the 2006 Penguin edition of Shirley Jackson’s, "We Have Always Lived in the Castle." Interesting blog.

You're in for a treat, Anon. It's wonderfully mad stuff.

For those who like Algernon Blackwood, I'd recommend Clark Ashton Smith
