The Next Book

I finished the next book, which, after many late nights, fingernail biting, and moments of white-screen despair, is finally with my editor. This is part of a new fantasy series. My original title for the book doesn't really seem to fit any more, so that's out of the window. Now I just have to think of a new one.

Of course the book still has to go through the editing process. But that's the best part of writing. There are no more blank pages to fill, only characters to tweak, plot elements to adjust, and prose to improve.

And then I need to take a holiday.

Dear Alan,
This is great news! Since reading Scar Night I have been entering your blog almost every day, even though this is the first post this year. If you could give us some more details, we would certainly appreciate it quite a lot!

Thanks, guys.

Stefano, the book is set in a Deepgatesque type world which is *somehow* connected to the previous books. Thomas Granger is a munitions expert who has become a fugitive and now runs a private jail in the backwaters of the empire. He's busy wondering how to escape his crummy life, when he takes charge of two new prisoners - a woman and her daughter who claim to know him. But there's something very unusual about the girl, something that makes her extremely valuable to certain powerful people in the empire.

Sounds great! I am really looking forward to it. Is there already any expectative for a release date? And will Dominic Harman be doing the cover once again?
Thanks for the great news.

It won't be out until next year, I'm afraid. As to the cover, I'm not sure who MacMillan will choose yet.

I'm excited about the fourth book, just finished god of clocks and want to read more.

just wondering will Rachel Hael and other characters for the first three books be appearing in the fourth one? or will it be new characters?

ah - awesome! nice to see writers who actually write! instead of just blog about their eating habbits and tv-adaptations (fuck you, grrm!).

Get your agent to ride the publishers on getting the book published in a neat e-format. Two years ago I figured e-readers would be a short lived fad. now I buy books on the kindle semi-weekly.

Cheers. I'm pretty sure it will be out in e-book format.

Regarding blogging: I'm not particularly fond of it, I have to say - which accounts for the total lack of posts this year.

Exciting news, just finished your second book recently, I'll have to grab the third one pretty soon here. Is there any chance of Lye Street being sold as an e-book? I'd love to read it, but people are selling the thing for hundreds of dollars, so...

Alan Campbell said...

Thanks Jesse.

I'll ask my publishers about Lye Street as an e-book.

Congrats. I look forward to it!

+1 for Lye Street as an ebook! I really want to read that; I LOVED the Deepgate Codex! I'm so glad I walk in to a shop and often DO judge a book by it's cover!

Great news on the new book, will certainly be pre-ordering it! But please make sure this has a proper ending unlike God of Clocks!

@Anonymous,
I am not looking for a discussion, but I believe God of Clocks did have a proper ending. It was not usual and it was not a big, epic, twist-less battle as happens in most fantasy books. I particularly found it anti-climatic in an intelligent way, simply depicting the Godess' power and at the same time portraying the simultaneous unimportance and importance of the character's actions/lives. I say this because without doing what they did, the Godess (whose name I do not remember) would not have been "awakened", but her omnipotence makes the universe look small and frail.
I hope Adam continues to give us interesting characters in beautifully constructed and descripted worlds, while innovating as far as the story's progression is concerned.

Definitely loved God of Clocks, the ending was brilliant. It's rare to see a writer take that brave of a step and avoid the typical trap most writers fall to: "oh shit, i better set shit up for a sequel in case it sells well."

I really hope you've had offers to do either animated or some form of film versions of these books, you're a brilliant author, looking forward to the next one!
