The World Went Mad Again this Week.

Wednesday, June 04, 2008

An airline passenger was threatened with arrest at Heathrow Airport and told that he wouldn't be allowed to fly. His crime? Wearing a t-shirt depicting Megatron, the evil robot leader of the Decepticons.

IT consultant Brad Jayakody from London was told his t-shirt was "offensive" because the 40ft cartoon robot had a gun for an arm. He escaped arrest, and eventually caught his flight, by changing into another shirt.

BAA leader, Optimus Prime, was unavailable for comment.

Obama has clinched the Democrats' Presidential nomination. Or has he? The Republicans might just leap to Hillary's rescue yet, if rumours concerning a certain video tape are true. The video allegedly shows Obama's wife using the term "whitey" during a speech.

Whitey? That's right up there with Megatron for offensiveness.

West Midlands Police threatened two Christian preachers with arrest for handing out gospel leaflets in a predominantly Muslim area of Birmingham. Apparently some people now consider this a "hate crime." (Not to be confused with the more acceptable "love crime", which is committed out of deep respect and compassion for the victim.)

Evangelists Arthur Cunningham and Joseph Abraham are both whiteys. However, squads of armed police officers were called off after it became clear that the two preachers were not wearing Transformer t-shirts.

Condoleezza Rice said there's no point in talking to Iran unless the regime gives up its suspected nuclear weapons ambitions.

How do you give up "suspected" ambitions? How can you convince someone that their suspicions are false if they won't talk to you?

"I suspect you're trying to deceive me."
"I'm not."
"Well I'm not talking to you unless you give up your suspected ambitions."
"But..."
"Na Na Na. Not listening. Na Na Na."

Iran recently announced it was shifting away from the US dollar as oil currency -- a move which would deal a huge blow to the dollar and possibly threaten America's future status as sole superpower. Coincidentally, Iraq tried the same thing in late 2000, although they have now seen the error of their ways -- having returned to the petro-dollar after the US-led invasion to halt Saddam's suspected WMD program.

Well, at least on the christian ministers issue, it was one numpty Police Community Support Officer acting stupidly, rather than any official policy.

If something is a 'hate crime' then surely it is a lesser offense since you are not committing it with cold-blooded intent? Like being charged with murder for a premeditated killing or manslaughter for losing your temper and thumping someone so hard it kills them.
